JavaScript is a scripting language, not a programming language. it is mainly used for validation in client side, not the server side.

JavaScript is an evolving programming language. Originally just for browser client side scripting, with libraries like node.js and angular.is with addons like Cordova/phonegap
it can run stand alone, server side store and write files locally and so forth.
