You should remember the syntax (or as you call "format") of the codes, just as you do with math formulae. Then try to do practices by coding your own program using that syntax.
A good tip that worked for me: Note down whatever you learn, including the code itself. Although it requires patience, at one point you'll not face any difficulties trying to code.
