It's a great question. I'm a Biologists and Information Technology, in Brazil. I'm also learning python to develop more bioinformatics, geotechnology and data science.

First you need to be excellent at what you do - the responsibilities of a data scientist. Second, and sometimes I think the latter is more critical to "success." And it is having a manager/hiring manager who believes you are awesome!
