What is the negative value assignment usage?

My general understanding is that negative values are assigned for errors .. but are there programs or applications with negative values used in OperatingSistems? if yes then which? .. where can i find related info?

think how a calculator would work if it threw errors when someone did 1 - 2

not sure if this is a language specific question, but in Java and C++, you can subtract 1 by 2 perfectly fine and assign that value to a variable

I know that the question is not clear by itself! The reason is that i had asked about that before somewhere else and i had searched about the problem .. a lot! So i did not want to enter the discussions again!
Briefly speaking few years ago i noticed some unknown processes in system activity table .. they still sometimes -when system is rebooted- show up!
These processes belonged to root and also belonged or labeled as -1
They had strange behaviours such as showing different IDs and disappearing fastly!
They started from being one process and grew up to a number more than 30
