I'm a huge fan of Linode.com for quality servers at very affordable flat fee pricing. With root access, you gotta know what you're doing. It gets pricier if you opt for managed server options.

AWS is very reliable and quite affordable at first. However, it can get pricey with high volume traffic, storage, and bandwidth.

Seriously though... VPS is Virtual Private Server used for hosting applications. VPN is a secure connection to another network from a remote location.
