How do web servers work?

I've finished the PHP course, but I'm still confused, Do servers need to be constantly connected to the Internet? and how do domain names and IP addresses have a relationship?

No servers do not require to be constantly connected to the www or other net but a connectionless server is useless.
A domain name is something you have to reserve and it just means that anyone searching for that name with a browser will be redirected to your hosting machine. It is just like covering your IP behind a name, in the end it is for humans to read it easily
