Encoding of Swedish letters åäö/ÅÄÖ

Question

Letters å and Å are encoded as &aring and &Aring respectively.

I can easily remember this by thinking: "Letter a/A with a 'ring' on top of it", which obviously is the intention of using &aring/&Aring, or? :-)

How about ä/ö (&auml/&ouml) and Ä/Ö (&Auml/&Ouml)?

Is there a logical reason why 'uml' is used?

uml stands for "umlaut" which is the name for the two dots mark on top of a vowel. Used in German also.
