Hi Megha
A Data Scientist is someone that can extract knowledge from data sets. This is slightly different from a Data Analyst who typically will be the developer/coder who will use specific tools to manipulate the data.
The Data Scientist will normally have a strong background on maths and statistics vs Computer Science.
I would say this is a very good field to get into, especially with overlap with Machine Learning. You will see data scientists in all companies that have large datasets .eg Games Companies, Consumer facing companies and Finance.

Definition of Data Scientist:
"a person employed to analyse and interpret complex digital data, such as the usage statistics of a website, especially in order to assist a business in its decision-making.
"Silicon Valley technology companies are hiring data scientists to help them glean insights from the terabytes of data that they collect everyday" (via Google).
Big data is going to keep growing for a very long time! Think about the amount of data created on social media alone!
My next door neighbour's daughter worked in research, after getting her PhD in Astrophysics from Oxford University! All of her friends were highly educated working in research on average salaries. They almost all left to become data scientists. They now have huge pay packets in London.
Of course, it's not all about money. If you enjoy maths then it can be great.
Ethically, some of the jobs are dodgy.
AI + Social Media + Nudge Theory + Big Data + Rogue Person or State = Manipulation of People (without them knowing) = The end of democracy.
However, all jobs can have ethical issues!

A bit over-rated, but this Venn diagram kind of shows the basic understanding of the fields:

The point of asking questions here relating to the purpose of the sololearn platform is to create a discussion where we get diverse submissions from members who are acquainted in the field on which the question is asked. Not for someone to say "Google it", we know what Google is for and but I find it much crucial and interesting if questions posted for discussions are discussed here. That's my opinion tho

I am pretty sure that search results on Google can tell you a lot more about that than us 😉

I think this will be help full...

Uzair, it obviously does. R, SAS and Python are the languages used mainly for Data science. While R and Python are Open Source, SAS isn't. If you have ever heard of Big Data and Hadoop, they are actually part of Data science. Data science is basically data statistics and handling large data.
Dar..., AI is surely a huge field currently and it is anyways going to do all our jobs in less than 100 years. But till AI takes over these things, humans have to do do these jobs anyways. Current progress of AI has reached till level of world known Sophia, the AI Robot who has officially become citizen of a country (which means a near human robot AI). Still for AI to take our jobs totally, it's gonna be a long way.
Megha, Data science is surely a promising field given at what huge levels it can perform, and it is also one of the bases for the AI itself
As AI and prediction uses a large amount of probabilities and statistical data, they will be interdependent in future as @Dar... pointed

Hi!
Simple definition for a Data Scientist is the one who deals with data according to the business type, which means you need to have good:-
1. Mathematics
2. Algo conductions
3. DBMS
4. Awareness of latest support of new techs and tools.
But all in all its a highly demanding area as a career and my suggestion for you would be that Yes, you must go for it. If I had to brief you about it's scope, then I'll say that every type of market and business really requires a data scientist today.

yes, it's good for future scope.

Everything you learn will helpful in your future.
Data science is a great field for future.

Dar...
1. Use '@' symbol before name to highlight the person
2. Quantum computing is still not in state to understand even basic programming, I'm not sure that if we can implement our normal binary programming rules to use it. So mid 20s doesn't seem quite right, maybe like late 30s. Tell me if I'm wrong.
3. AI has still lot to learn. Even if there is a master-mind code like in Tron, which as you say will spread throughout the computer world, it will have to be one single program and not copies or replicas, because such a program will gather and generate tremendous amount of data which you probably won't be able to store properly. To be precise, it will be messy if it doesn't happen gradually. World is getting fast, but AI is and will be faster. So I'm saying that maybe it will be a tsunami or explosion of AI, like you said, which humanity might not be able to handle. So I say maybe better off at a little slower speeds.
Again... correct me if I'm wrong

Dar...
1. When you type '@', a list pops up of names, if you choose a name from one of those, that person gets notified specifically.
2. As you said, given by the estimates, if Quantum computers reach markets till mid 20s for common use, then also they will be extremely expensive, which means most people won't be able to use it as they will be even more expensive than GPUs (obviously). I myself come from a middle class family who can't afford a GPU. So I was saying late 30s by those means. Assuming that whole earth will be computerized till then, because I am doing a degree in Computer science and I have few friends who don't even have PC or Laptop and few who don't even know how MS Word works. Sadly, rate of literacy itself is very less than rate of change in technology and science, leave alone the rate of computer literacy.
3. Siri or such applications use a centralized database. If AI programs are to be spread throughout the world, their databases will have to be different for each program. We won't be able to store that much data everywhere.

I dont understand which is your position about Data Science Dar... Do you think it has a clear future to work in Data Science or not? You are being ambiguous it seems to me...

Math, computing, business, communication.

data scientist will get a huge ton also a life with passion if you enjoy that while it is different from data analyst

Dar... Good point. AI could well indeed replace a large percentage!

Data Science is a great field to get into if you’re interested in Math, Statistics, Machine Learning, AI etc. This field is going to be popular for some time to come. And it would be a lot of fun!

I hope your area will develop soon.
Which means we still have to wait till then.

Cyk.. I ever look at google and when I clicked the result I got an answer "TRY GOOGLE"
