Is it possible to learn enough java in four months?

Dude, you need to slow down. Read this book (properly): "Thinking in Java"
I borrowed it from a friend some time ago and it taught me three things:
1. A little Java which I've mostly forgotten.
2. Much better OO understanding (I was struggling with moving to C++).
3. That Java was not the walk in the park I thought it'd be.

Sufficed to say I didn't get very far. Still, it's a learner-friendly book (despite what some people say). It's very daunting in size though. It was, by my guess, three normal paperbacks' worth of info. That was one of his books. He had a few!

He moved to the UK years back and is working, but he's still just a junior dev.

There is no learn X in Y. Books claiming to teach you a language in a short length of time should be avoided like Ebola.

What you can learn in 4 months by "speed learning" is how to write code that:
*. is bad practice,
*. error prone,
*. you don't fully understand,
*. and write-only.
Rather take your time because once bad practices settle in, they are hard to unlearn (personal experience).

You can learn a lot in 4 months, but obviously it depends on how much time you can spend studying each day and so on
