What is the best way to transition to a new Project Role?

What do a programmer needs to do (acquire skills, and certifications etc.) to transition to a Project Management role? Is dev experience enough or something else is accounted as well?

Be a good developer, get some people to support you, and (looks like a job type thing) show how well you work with a team, be a good role model and leader to those "below" you.
