Is learning computer languages as important as learning foreign languages used to be?

I would say it's important to learn the right stuff depending on your situation. Computer languages can be more important than foreign languages.

Learning foreign languages doesn't add a lot of value if they aren't really used in real life (happened to me). If they are world languages then they can add of course a lot of value.

Concerning computer languages it's probably the best to learn the basic principles of programming, like algorithms, a good coding style, logical thinking, debugging, how computers work in general... So that it can be applied to any language.

I wouldn't want to miss foreign languages (even if I hated to learn them) and programming languages (like to learn them) in my life.

it's all the time good to be flexible. My main purpose to join SoloLearn was to learn some JavaScript, because I might need it soon. Anyway, I ended up making all the courses and started a little project to compare the languages (at last a small part of them)...

I love learning both, Modi. Foreign languages keep the brain working and are a delight to hear and speak. Also, it feels great when you travel around and discover you don't have to "stick to English" for no matter what. I've been trying to learn a little of Java, C++, Html/CSS/JavaScript, Python and C#. On a serious note, depends what you want to do in life.

If you never plan to travel, learning a foreign language has minimal use for many people.

If you love hands on work or playing sport and would like to make them your career then learning computer language is pretty much useless.

If you don't have any set plans, then learning coding can be a very useful skill to have to keep your options open.

About 26years ago I did typing at school to learn to touch type. I didn't use it much for about 8 years, but ever since I use it nearly everyday. Makes me a very efficient coder due to my typing speed and accuracy. I watch other people type and just want to grab the keyboard from them. If you learn to code and do it early, you could be leaping ahead of colleagues in years to come.
