I can say that the profession does not require either of the degree’s as I have worked with good and bad programmers in my career. Note that their is a general difference between programmers which know how to program and others who are trained in engineering from a school. Both can do the job but one would software design better than the other there by having re-iterations to solve the same problem. CS engineers know low level programming and hardware related issues which are rare to be found in programmers. I have had many arguments with people who are senior in experience but don’t know how GPU and CPU work. And usually optimization tasks are given to engineers who know low level coding or at-least have a general understanding of how machine code works.
