It really depends, I would suggest knowing at least one low level language like C or C++ and a high level one like Python.

java is most sought out language for now...but learning c and java makes it easy for u to learn c++ and c#. python is bit different but most of syntax is same for all languages.

A little i know software engineers are not necessarily coders too as software engineering is a full subject and a field to practice. . This is a whole topic to be covered but in short a little i have learned is 1. you should have a good grip on all basics languages(c++,c#,java) 2.Nowdays desktop apps are being fastly replaced with web apps so you would need hands on client side and server side languages (html, css,Js,angular js,jquery, ajax, json, mysql,MEAN Stack, php etc. 3. Smart phones and their apps are also biggest contribution too and rewarding too so if you have passion for them they can give you a good return on your skill ( android,iOS) You knew that there are alot of other languages exist too in market but once you have knowledge of basic languages then learning other languages syntax is not that difficult. Finally it is all about your passion and hard work you put into your skills. Nowdays freelancing has open door for all beginners to Expert to get into field .
