Is php a good choice for an app backend?

I want to learn php as a server side language for web applications(maybe I want to start freelancing as soon as possible) but because the app market is growing alot and php isn't that good as it was the past days I am not sure if php is the right choice.

I say yes easy to read, write, faster

as PHP is faster than java, python but people are hating to use pHp and stopped using pHp for back end because of its poor design , So if you are willing to use another language then python, Ruby on Rails,java can do better
