I am not a professional yet but am a software engineering student. The core things that I do to write good code are as under: Note: The following steps are not enough in all cases but these are the steps I always take when building a big project. 1. Make Use Case Diagrams. 2. Make sequence diagrams ( if the steps needed to achieve the use case are complicated) 3. Make the database first( it is not final but it may help you structure some classes for your application). 4. Make class diagrams. Note that this diagram is not all of your project. Its just a core for your project. Note that this step becomes easier if step 2 has been taken already. Step 3 also assists in building class diagrams. 4. Start to code. You should have a firm grasp of OOP if you want to write a high quality code that is easily scalable as well For successfully completing all of the above steps you need a lot of practice in every one of them i.e. you should have practiced making uml diagrams, you should have learned MySQL etectra.
