Variables are the entities which don't have a fix value. In more simpler terms, anything whose value is not fixed and can be changed is a variable.
For ex, 1 has a fixed value. You can't specify it the value of 2. But you can specify x, value of 1,2,3 e.t.c. as per your wish. Hence, x is a variable.

we can simply understand as (It is an element, feature, or factor that is liable to vary or change.)
but in a programming term we can say as
"The naming of an address is known as variable. Variable is the name of memory location. Unlike constant, variables are changeable, we can change value of a variable during execution of a program"
