List in C#?

I want to declare a list in C# but it puts out the error: ” The type or namespace name 'List<>‘ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)“
Does anyone know how to fix this an declare a list ?

System.Collections.Generic;

namespace.
