|| operator has higher precedence than = operator, so || expression will be evaluated first.

if ( a= (8 || b==5) )
8 || b==5 is true
so value 1 is assigned to the 'a' variable
if(a=1) is true so if statement will execute

As you are sending operations so it is considering 3 as i just change your code to ( (3+1))

It will give you the desired output
