A number of "hardcore" programmers who love C language dont understand why less efficient languages like Python, or to a less extent, Java, are so popular. The main reason in my opinion is that Python is really friendly and easy to learn, compared to C/C++ which are harder to learn (but more efficient).
Many scientists/technicians/amateurs... from many fields who want to create light codes for specific tasks dont have time or even care about efficiency enough to learn C.
The first language I learnt was Python, then Java, then assembly and then i moved on to C/C++, so thats what happened to me :)
