Where is the best place to start competing in programming challenges for a new programmer?

I want to up my programming skill, and I've heard competing in challenges is the way to go; however, i tried what looked like a simple challenge on Hacker Rank, and it seemed really hard. I have also heard of topcoder. Which one is best for newbies? or is there another site? Do you guys compete? Thank you for your insight! Please like so more people will see!
