I definitely think JQuery is better than JavaScript even though, yes, JavaScript is the mother of JQuery but it is easier to use and extremely efficient, such as accessing elements and manipulating the DOM.

You need JavaScript knowledge for work with jquery, the DOM model...etc. JavaScript is the "base".
So if you want to improve one of these, I prefer JavaScript because in the future will appear new trendy libraries like now angularjs or nodejs and will become easier to learn with strong JavaScript knowledge.
