What the others are talking about is called cracking. Hackers have different categories like white-hat who are using their knowledge to create systems, programs and they are trying to defend against cyber attacks.
The black-hat who are using their knowledge to hack and crack their targets getting money out of it in the process.
The gray hat who are hacking other systems etc. but they aren't causing damage but sell their knowledge. So they hack a system then ask for money to correct the mistakes and holes they have found. This one is the middle path..
All hackers have high degrees of knowledge in a given field but usually it's both network and programming as both of them are necessary..
In a way, you could say that the hackers are the 'big brothers' of the programmers. Originally the crackers were the ones we call hackers nowadays.. It has happened in the 80' s that the term 'hackers' spread like the 'evil' ones thanks to Hollywood and the real crackers.
I hope that this answer was to your satisfying. :D

Hacker is a fantastic coder :)
Lots od people divide hacker into a separate group lol. Hacking is directly connected with programming. The only difference is programmers write the code to make some program, indeed hackers play with the code and use it for malicious purposes.

the lore says there are two types of programmers "hackers and tools" I think it means tools are like a key to a lock and hackers are like axes to doors.
never forget it's hack to learn not learn to hack.
ps google "tech model railroad hack"

TBH I'm interested in learning everything. I like to know what is surrounding me. I don't have malicious ideas though so black-hat is a no go for me. I just want to understand the electrical world covering our planet and maybe improve it if my knowledge lets it. :D
