Person of mechanical background can make his career in programming with artificial intelligence? If yes, how he should proceed?

Iam a mechanical engineer as a fresher and looking to build my career in Artificial Intelligence. In which parts of programming should I focus to land job in it.

Take some programming classes( in person, MOOC ), work on a few projects (Raspberry PI, Arduino, Web, Javascript, Apps, Cloud.. whatever), get a job, work in the industry for couple years, take on more responsibility.. Keep learning new things.. Breadth, Depth both matter.
