These days, the usage of these technologies has expanded.

NodeJS and other Javascript technologies have allowed developers to develop applications, as well as back-end web-services (and UI as usual). For example, Atom (text editor) is written in Javascript.

Java has many frameworks to allow development of web-services... though thankfully, not the UI for websites.
