The 3 days is the period given for you to try and get the feel of the pro feature. To allow you to know the difference and decide how you will be using the app later on.
After the 3 days of trial you may choose to extend the subscription or continue with the free usage.
You are free to choose to subscribe for pro feature or not, there's no obligation whatsoever. But if you feel like the cost was within your budget range, then consider the subscription as your token of support for the app development : )

The app is free. But you can buy Pro subscription to unlock some additional stuff like more code coach problems and removing ads.

Yes it's free and if you enjoy it you can buy the pro version to unlock the pro features

To be honest, the biggest benefit of going pro is no more ads.
I think it is worth paying for the first year at least (try free for a bit first, to make sure you will get the benefit of paying for a year).
Learn as much as you can, then go back to free to keep it as a handy reference and playground.
