Imagine a cake. If you cut it in half, you get two halves. This can be illustrated with float numbers.
1 = 0.5 + 0.5
If you cut one half in half again you will get
1 = 0.5 + 0.25 + 0.25
But if you had 2 pies and half of one is gone then you get:
2 - 0.5 = 1.5
