Martin Taylor I just wanted to clarify that Dalvik has been replaced by the ART (Android Runtime) since Android 5.0 back in 2014.

ART is still able to load Dalvik bytecode from dex files, but the Dalvik VM has been deprecated for nearly 6 years now.

You are correct. Java bytecode cannot directly be loaded in either Dalvik or ART.
