Versioning concepts, conventions and policy

As a begginer and not being teached by school i'm confused trying to answer thre questions:
1.Concept - should i "bind" coding and documenting documentation methods with each other?
2. Are there any conventions of informing end-user ? I.e. numbering, alpha ver,beta ver, RC.
3. What about informing end-user? What to set confident?
