how do I learn the overall process part of programming?

I'm looking for help with IDE/compiler/implementation advice. everyone teaches the code, but I failed to learn the A-to-Z process. coding is easy enough, but I have no idea about how/where to do with it. my question now - how do I learn the overall process part of programming?

I don't need coding advice - I need process advice. implementation. compiling. say I wrote a snippet, how do I execute/manipulate it? on that level of learning, no one teaches. every coder learns it, but I can't start writing without the knowledge of how everything fits together. do you have any ideas on this topic?

I'm not looking for where the * goes, I need where the file goes. in construction terms, I need architecture advice, like framing, plumbing, electrical - not putting paintings on the walls. I should have been more clear.
