depends on what kind of Game Engine you use. Unreal Engine use C++ language, Unity 3D use C#, RPG maker usr Ruby. But if you make it from scratch, C is the answer

If you first learn the basics of c++ which will tell you much about how a program works- in several months you can get it- then whichever program you choose it will be easy to understand. I strongly recommend to exercise with books and read books. My favorite is visual Studio 2017, it's the best.

Unity game engine has its own language but allows you to use JavaScript or C#. Unreal game engine uses C++. I come from a 3D background. A lot of 3D programs allow you to run Python scripts. Figure out what exactly you want to do in game production or what companies you want to work for and what they are using in their pipelines and learn that. Google is your best friend. Research, research, research.

This book is a great one and may be the best to begin with. You learn C# programming side by side to unity. Give it a try and you'll love it. Could tell you money back if you don't like but it is not my book :) https://www.amazon.com/Learning-C-Programming-Unity-3D/dp/1466586524
