learning R after learning Python

Question

can you learn R (more) quickly if you have a good understanding of Python? would you say that learning R is a worthwhile addition for a GIS specialist/data scientist?

if you know how to use Python there is no need to learn R because everything that can be done using R can be done using Python... well that's what my professor told me atleast... but it's nice to learn an alternative just to have an upper hand
