Sometimes it takes years, sometimes just a few months, depends on how hard you work at it.

Knowing the language and its syntax and knowing how to build software are two different things. You can learn the syntax quickly and master the language in a year or two depending on the language but crafting good software takes longer and requires experience. But you need to build software and learn more to get the experience or you will not master anything. The more time you spend learning and programming the sooner you will master it but it depends on you and the time. There is a lot to master in JavaScript. You should also read books. You can start with JavaScript the Good Parts and Effective JavaScript as a beginner. Then you will get a better picture.
