A pointer is a variable whose value is the address of another variable. Like any variable or constant, you must declare a pointer before you can work with it.

Pointers are very useful and offer great advantage as far as speed, ease of access and efficiency go. The syntax is a little different since new symbols are introduced (*,&) but you will find that once you master it, it is an asset in a programmer's arsenal. Many many things you can do with pointers.
