Now about how it works. Well, that's a difficult question to answer. What I can say is that this is an area still in development that is divided in many segments that are evolving separatly.
Some segments try to answer the question of human vision, others the human speach, ... and try to understand how humans perceive their environment to replicate it in software. Scholars in this field follow different path to create softwares that show inteligence.

One of the segments of artificial inteligence that is now very developed is called machine learning. In short, it uses many algorithms to make softwares that can learn from a set of data.

It is already being implemented, for example, in the email systems to learn if an email is a spam or not; in E-comercial sites to make sugestions to the user of products he/she may like....
