Is it hard getting a job as a freelance developer?

Any freelance devs here? What do you need to get a job? Is it hard? How important is a good reference?

I did a website or two in the past for small businesses. References is what got me those opportunities. I believe in marketing and advertising. If you become known within the niche you want to service, you should get clients.
