Oh dear, you might have rekindled am old flame war. Anyway, Emacs and Vim are pretty much the gold standards I'm terms of text editors. Get started in any of these and you will see how far they bend and stretch to meet your demands. They also work on many many more platforms than other editors and let you carry knowledge across everywhere. They also work with hundreds of programming languages.
