What generally is required to be done in coding competitions ?

In a coding competition are we required to code with a particular task in mind and if so how do they create various sorts of levels during the competition. What are the common languages used in competitions?

Typically the competitions (in my university at least) will state the rules beforehand. Generally they let you use whatever programming language you want, given it can complete the task.

Unless the competition states otherwise, it's usually a free for all, and you have a time limit to complete it.
