Firstly, alt is called an attribute, not a tag. It is used for the possibility that your browser can't find the image--the value of alt is displayed instead as text.

Whenever I code things using Adobe Dreamweaver it tells me that I must include the alt attribute for img tags, but my code always works without it. So it's not necessary, but somehow it must be more proper to use it.
