Going by Peter Norvig, Google's chief scientist, anywhere between 5 to 10 years. Or, however long you take to spend the magical 10000 hours practicing. That is a good measure for your programming prowess.
Why do I want to be a good programmer has changed many times over the years. Rosy eyed me wanted to rub shoulders with the elite programmers and build bad ass pieces of work. Later on, it was just to stay in engineering branch and to not get pulled into management branch of business. After all these years, this is the biggest selling point I have to bargain with employers. Also, having spent many years doing this, I am too old and lazy to learn a new line of work.
Looking at how quick automation is catching up, I'm wondering whether I'd be replaced by a machine or will I be made to manage the army of machines that will replace me and many more like me. Or can I get away by saying I'm too good to be replaced by machines? One look at barliman can give you these thoughts.
