1. The process of package management, the concept of repositories, and a couple more features makes it possible for Linux to be more secure than Windows .
2. Linux supports almost all of the major programming languages (Python, C/C++, Java, Perl, Ruby, etc.). Moreover, it offers a vast range of applications useful for programming purposes.
The Linux terminal is superior to use over Windowâs command line for developers. You would find many libraries developed natively for Linux. Also, a lot of programmers point out that the package manager on Linux helps them get things done easily.
Interestingly, the ability of bash scripting is also one of the most compelling reasons why programmers prefer using Linux OS.
Linux also brings in native support for SSH, which would help you manage your servers quickly. You could include things like apt-get commands which further makes Linux one of the most popular choices of the programmers.
3 . Variety of distribution .
There are no flavors of Windows. Yes, you may have different plans & packages which differ in licensing terms, the period of activation, packaged features, and price.
In contrast, you will find tons of Linux distribution catered for a different set of needs. So, you can choose to install any of the available Linux distros according to your requirements.
For example, there are Linux distributions for hackers, there are Linux distributions for programmers, there are Linux distributions for extremely old computers. There is a Linux for everyone.
4 . Like Windows,Linux will not need drivers. All the drivers are already included in the Linux kernel, the core of the system, and that comes with every single Linux installation.Â
These are just few over many . I have been windows user for many years but turned to ubuntu 2.5 years back and never looked back at windows ever again :)

The opportunity to have a full control over your OS. Terminal is just perfect.

you wouldn't find a Windows machine running a banking system, I had same problem with wireless drivers but after research and learning fixed these issues, Linux and Ubuntu has become more user friendly, I just think for development Ubuntu trumps Windows, for a regular user Windows probably wins, I still dual boot on my personal machine for certain applications, so I'm not dissing Windows that much đ

Windows has 100 error codes, Linux has 255. It makes it easier to handle errors.
Plus, Windows 10 eats 2.2 gB of RAM on launch, xfce4 ArchLinux - 450 mB on launch. TTY in Linux gives so much space for action, while Windows console gives about 200 commands to operate thr System.
I can't say Windows is bad, I say that personally I prefer Linux over Windows.

What about Windows security flaws, more acceptable to viruses, my preferred is Linux having been a Windows user for years, switching to Linux two years ago was best decision I've made, quicker start up times quicker downloads, did I mention all the bugs malware etc... Linux wins hand down for me, but interested in other people's experiences

why pay for a sytem if there are already free systems availlable.
i like open source. i.e. kernel.

@luka you can't override file if it's already in use in Windows. On Linux - you can do that.

Pure ArchLinux doesn't even have X.org, you can DYI the whole System the way you like. Windows is an easy solve for problems, but linux is great for those, who want to know everything about their System's 'insides'.

What about file overriding without closing the file?
