is there anyone who wants to be a data scientist or machine learning engineer here? I hope I can build a network in Sololearn, or just use this post as a hub for aspiring data scientists/machine learning engineers

I kind of am and that's exactly my profile description @github.com :D

I have recently finished a six-month junior data science bootcamp and completed a project, which is a car brand logo classifier. During the course, I also tackled regression, classification, clustering, lots of algorithms in all those fields and some more applied, practical solutions: client data mining, recommendation systems, image processing, NLP, as well as more big-data, infrastructure technologies: Jupyter, Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, etc.

I'm still at the "Aspiring" level, though. The subject is as fascinating as it is complex and hard to absorb, at least for me. Still, some progress has been made. You can check out my CNN at:

Yes, it is a supervised learning project utilizing a convolutional neural network. It was trained on some 17k 50x50 images and has a 94% accuracy (I have to update the description) on the test set. Also, I checked it on a totally different, unprocessed batch of fresh hi-res photos and got 100% accuracy :D

Last I knew, Coursera's Machine Learning course (opinion: excellent material + non-scary presentation) was free.

For free, you get a certificate but it isn't​ "verified". Verification requires you to certify that you aren't cheating and (among other proofs/bioinformatics) you attach photos from your webcam as proof that YOU are taking the test(s).

Consider this careful wording in the Machine Learning FAQ:

"What will I get if I pay for this course?"

Are you supposed to think payment is required or optional? This may just be practical marketing. Why not try enrolling and find out?

Yes... but split attention. I did Andrew Ng's course too and it was rewarding + fun.

I was poking at this code quietly because it's got some fancy initializers... but: SoloLearn's timeout forces it to low iterations and I wanted to coax it into a processing sweet spot for Numpy:

In personal testing, just converting to Numpy can accelerate < ~8x, but tweaking the array dimensions can yield almost 100x better performance.

I actually have finished Ng's Machine learning course. I'm just not really sure whether this would be valuable to apply for a job in my country, since online courses are virtually non-existent in my country. At the end of the course, I was asked to input credit card number when I tried to get the certificate. Currently, Coursera offers first 7 days trial and students can access anything (including the certificate?) for free. However, to access the free trial also requires you to input the credit card number, which is a problem for me since I don't have one (being poor in a third world country really sucks) *facepalm

@Hellenar: I literally take everything on the internet to study data science. Online courses are my classes, YouTube is my TV, and Intro to Statistical Learning is my bible :D
