Don't use your favorite colors. :D Usually going with a more simple format is the best format because it'll reach more of your visitors than not. For example, if you look at this site, Google, YouTube, Facebook, or anything like that, you usually have a white/black format with something (another color, logo, etc..) to offset things and pop out. It's easier on the eyes, and usually makes for a better experience for users.
