Nah. Don't pay attention, they usually put a lot of stuff you don't need to know inside of a book based on teaching you exactly what you need to know. *queue sarcasm* The stuff you learn in the first lessons is the stuff you'll be using more than anything else and inside of nearly everything else. Let me put it like this. Everything you don't pay attention to and learn through the first read through is all of the stuff you're going to spend a lot of time learning later because you didn't pay attention or understand it the first time. Nothing wrong with having to read the language over and over to get better & understand it further, and you'll end up doing that anyways, but there is a lot wrong with it if you're doing it because you decided to skip stuff because you're feeling lazy. Trust me, the lazy feeling is something you have to learn how to control sooner than later or it'll make a lot of areas of you life more difficult than it should be. As a wise man once said, brick walls aren't placed in front of us to keep us out, they're placed in front of us to keep out those who don't want it badly enough. Best of luck! Take all of your studies seriously and learn to the best of your ability. The easy route isn't always the best or quickest route. *edit* PS - Math is important for programming, regardless of the type of programmer you are. If you don't understand math concepts or how things actually work in the world, then you don't understand or recognize all of the various ways that you can go about stuff. You give yourself more options with the more math that you know, so don't take math for granted or overshadow its importance.

programming had more to do with logic than math. unless your program deals with encryption or heavy physics, no programming courses should focus on teaching mathematics. you are learning mathematical operators which is syntax

After you learn a couple of languages the math part is usually the same so if you learn python first you should be good with all the math stuff from there on out
