every day, and I'm one of them. But how many of us who don't program for a living will eventually get to the point of writing real, useful code? Thoughts?

It's not far as you might think it is.
Writing a useful code or making a useful program doesn't have to be a huge project.
Think about something that annoy you or something you think would be useful and go make a program about it.
You will learn a lot.
