It was gradual. When I started there was no Internet or anything like that, there were some specialized magazines in programming, I had an Apple II without floppy drive so I could at most type a program and see the result. When I turned it off I lost everything I had done. So I would type that code from the magazine and see what it did. Gradually I could change the program and see what happened. It took me a long time before I could finally create my own programs. And the sensation was a mixture of empowerment, relief, satisfaction. It is very much like the feeling of understanding a song in a language you are learning for the first time. It's a complete new ability.
