Unity is great, but if you want to make something with AWESOME graphics and if you want an open source, 100% royalty free engine, try CRYEngine. It is one of the best out of there. Crysis, Sniper Ghost Warrior, and many more successful games were made with this engine. And it is fairly easy to learn.

Honestly, Unity is only really powerful if your making a 3D game. Not to mention that Unity isn't open source 😩 (open source is always better 💖), also, when using bloated engines such as Unity, your code tends to get weighed down by stuff from the engine you don't really need. Personally, I suggest the Löve game framework (open source 💖), which is for Lua, a popular language in game development.
