I usually suggested my son to do projects that him and his friends are directly interested in, gaming for example. I also encourage him to do projects which reinforce his studies. If learning something new in math like the slope formula to apply it as a calculator for finding slopes. The important thing is to have fun while you're programming and that your code actually has a functional purpose.
