Class cannot be used in Div tag? Why

and in css
.some name{properties }
not working why?

Spaces aren't allowed and use quotation marks with class name while using div tag
Example:
IN HTML:-
<div class="somename">.....</div>
And IN CSS:-
.somename{ properties}
