Thieves recently stole my laptop from the hostel and got away with it. Can laptops be tracked?

So sorry to hear, unfortunately if they understood, they can shutdown the laptop to disable the tracking app (assumed installed) until they get it to a safe place where they can later wipe the disk to get rid of the entire drive content, those who do such things are usually quite aware, except for the amateurs, I hate to say that, but sadly it's a fact : (

Try this if you have your imei number that is on the box that you purchased your laptop with. (I think it could work for Laptops as well. When the thieves connect to the internet)

I may be wrong, but afaik there's a tracking hardware called Lojack in some of the laptops (some have built-in or you have to buy/install first). I'm not sure your laptop have one. It's for tracking stolen device, but ofcourse only if you know your laptop model, serial number, etc. You can't track on your own. You must first submit to the <i don't remember> organization for tracking your device. After they confirmed, they will give you a location. Then you need to contact to your local police for catching thieves.

If you have tracking software installed or if it's a MacBook and you have the right settings on, maybe. But it has to go online and stay online which is unlikely.
