Counting The Number Of Markers on a Diagonal On a Checkers Board (JAVA) ??

I'm currently writing a piece of JAVA code for counting the number of markers on a diagonal that crosses a specified marker & I don't have an idea where to begin. I'd like to be assisted on how to approach this kind of problem.
